We are happy and proud to announce that the first project organized with the active and financial support of the association APPEL was a great success!

*HansePferd 2014*

From 25 to 27 April, the Ecole de Légèreté and APPEL were present on the HansePferd fair in Hamburg, the biggest horse fair in northern Germany,
with a varied daily programme comprising:

- a booth of 7 square metres kindly sponsored by Pferdia TV,

- a 30-minute lecture of Philippe Karl on selected questions from the audience,

- a 30-minute practical demonstration by a licensed instructor and a student with their horse in the training ring,

- a 30-minute show featuring Philippe Karl on his Hanoverian gelding High Noon together with five instructors of the school from Germany, Hungary and Sweden in the big show arena.

At the booth near the training ring, numerous visitors took the opportunity to learn more about the work of Philippe Karl, the Ecole de Légèreté and the
association APPEL. The lecture and the practical presentations were also very well attended, and the big show was even greeted with repeated applause in between and standing ovations at the end! Several spectators reported having had goose bumps and tears in their eyes, and one even said that she had never seen anything so beautiful in her life.

The HansePferd fair was also a welcome occasion for many members of the Ecole de Légèreté to meet and get in touch, sometimes for the first time – the HansePferd team was joined by numerous members of the school from Denmark, France, Germany, Italy, Sweden, Switzerland and the UK.

Our overall impression was that the time is ripe for the Ecole de Légèreté to increasingly present its work to the general public. People really want to see light, harmonious riding, and at the HansePferd fair, they very clearly showed their appreciation and support through the overwhelming applause and interest in the work of Philippe Karl, the Ecole de Légèreté and the association APPEL.

We would like to thank everybody involved for making the HansePferd project such a success! Special thanks go to:
Gudrun Braun, Inge and Thomas Vogel of Pferdia TV
   Anja Seider-Manske of Cadmos Verlag
Sonja Hellwig, Antje Matthes and the whole Pegestorf team
Irene Boss, Susanne Buck-Wegener, Evelyn Schloßhahn-Wiedner, Gunnar Wiedner
   Nicole Weinauge and Kirsten Grahl
   Melanie Bulmahn and Lara Weidmann
Birgit Beck-Broichsitter, Edith Hermann, Christiane Horstmann, Edith Kappel from Hungary, Katja Lauer, whose horse was unfortunately lame, Anna Wallén from Sweden
   the countless grooms and helpers
   Ilka Flegel
and of course the stars of the show, Philippe Karl and High Noon

Seeing the very positive reception at HansePferd, the association APPEL is looking forward to promoting the next big project: the Fieracavalli horse fair
in Verona, Italy, on 6–9 November, where the Italian fraction of the Ecole de Légèreté will present the work of the school with the support of various instructors from other European countries.

*APPEL funding scheme*

The funding regulations of APPEL, which will be published shortly as soon as we have translated them in our many languages, foresee that each country will receive grants according to the contributions paid by the APPEL members of that country. For the HansePferd fair, for example, the contributions paid by the German members of APPEL enabled the association to finance, among other things, the equipment of the booth, the fee of the translator, half of the fee for the horses’ boxes and, as compensation for the riders, a fixed amount per day plus a variable sum depending on the distance travelled.

Our “country-related” funding scheme means that countries with many APPEL members can apply for a higher amount of funding than countries with few APPEL members. So, if you’re interested in carrying out a project related to the Ecole de Légèreté in your country, don’t hesitate to recruit as many members to APPEL as you can!

*Flyer and benefits for APPEL members*

To help you promote the Ecole de Légèreté and APPEL, the association has devised a flyer as one of the first elements of our corporate design. The flyer is only in German at the moment, but we are working on the English, French and Italian translations, which we will make available to you as soon as they are ready.

One recurring question when trying to recruit new members to APPEL is: “What benefits do I get by becoming a member of the association?” To help you in your argumentation, the flyer lists 10 idealistic reasons why people would want to become members of APPEL and promote the cause of Philippe Karl and the Ecole de Légèreté. Besides the intangible value of supporting the art of classical riding in lightness, all members of APPEL are entitled to apply for funding for projects related to the school. Once the new website of Philippe Karl and the association will be ready, members will have access to exclusive information in a restricted area of the site. And as a special bonus, APPEL members are granted a 5% discount on spectator fees at all the teachers’ courses of the Ecole de Légèreté.

*Photos and information on*

To give you an impression of the HansePferd fair, you will find a few photos of the event attached to this email. Many thanks to Maike Klein ( and Sabine Mosen for the great photographs!

We are currently working on the relaunch of the website, which will include several pages related to the association APPEL. Until that relaunch, we have included one page on the association in the current website. As of 30 April, the English and German association pages are ready, the French page will come online soon.

English page “Association APPEL”:
German page “Förderverein APPEL”:

On each of these pages, you will find the following information for download:
- the Articles of Association (Statuts / Satzung) in French, English and German
- the membership application form in English, French, German and Italian
- the membership fee regulations in English, French, German and Italian
and the list of the benefits that people get by becoming member of APPEL.

On the German page of the association, you will also find the German version of the flyer for the Ecole de Légèreté and APPEL for download. Paper copies for use at events and presentations can be ordered from Sonja Hellwig and Antje Matthes at We will put the English, French and Italian versions of the flyer on the website for download as soon as they are ready.

We have also written a more detailed account of the HansePferd fair for the “News” page. This account is only in German at the moment, but the English and French versions are in the making (sorry, but being an international school and association with a website in three languages doesn’t make things easier!).
The German version is at:
and the English and French versions will be published at:   and   respectively.
Dear friends of the Ecole de Légèreté, we thank you all for your trust, your help and your financial support, which have made the wonderful HansePferd event in Hamburg possible!

We are looking forward to funding many other exciting projects all over the world.
